CNN.com - Surfer fends off shark attack - Apr 16, 2005

Sounds like a win-win situation - perhaps the shark just wanted to go surfing?

Seriously, we recognize the tragedy of shark/human accidents and our deepest sympathies go out to the families of shark attack victims. However, sharks attack folks who are swimming because they appear to be something non-human and tasty. It's nothing personal and, hey, that is the shark's turf, so to speak. Sharks live in the water. Humans live on land. Humans in the water have to accept the possible risk of being mistaken for a seal or a turtle. If sharks were to go hang out on the land they would face similar risks.

More sharks are attacked and eaten by humans in one year than humans have ever in all time been attacked and eaten by sharks.

We wonder how many Norwegians go whale-watching on holiday, too...%-/

(Yeah, it must seem strange: sharks advocating "save the whales" :-)

In our vast amounts of spare time we will have to do an article on whales and whaling. We recognize that some cultures traditionally hunt whales for food and that generally in those cultures whales are considered somewhat sacred because of this. We don't understand commercial whaling under the guise of "research", nor do we understand why such large scale hunting operations are necessary.

It seems quite contradictory that a good portion of the tourists going whale-watching then go home and eat said whales :-(

And, it seems quite hypocritical to call commercial whaling "research": "The meat ends up on store shelves and on the tables of gourmet restaurants."

It's really sad what some cruel humans can do to other living things :-(
