"A decade ago, she recalled, the male gorilla at Franklin Park Zoo in Boston was led in to say goodbye to his longtime partner who had died of cancer. Her illness hadn't been outwardly apparent, so her mate wasn't prepared for her death.
'He was howling and banging his chest,' Fernandes recalled. 'And he picked up a piece of her favorite food - celery - and put it in her hand and tried to get her to wake up. I was weeping, it was so emotional.'"
