Update on Audubon Aquarium of the Americas

Published by Bob and Ray under on 1:15 AM
Thankfully, the Gulf area zoos are doing well for the most part, although the Oceanarium in Gulfport suffered animal losses.

We found this report on the Aquarium of the Americas, which had to be evacuated because of the civil disorder and violence that overtook New Orleans:
"Meanwhile the aquarium, which held up physically during the hurricane, has lost more than one-third of its 4000 fish due to failing air pumps which normally oxygenate the tanks. Late last week the staff was evacuated from the facility due to mounting violence in the area."
That makes us really, really angry - so angry we could cry. Those animals at the aquarium had come through the storm okay and would have been all right if not for the civil unrest. 1200 innocent fish are dead, gone forever. You know, sharks make the news whenever they do what wild animals in the wild (the ocean, in their case) do, and bite someone. But, sharks have nothing on man's inhumanity to man. There is NO EXCUSE for that shameful violent behavior in New Orleans last week.
